Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. The health of the environment plays an important role when it comes to our overall health and well-being. For example, when the air we breathe and water we use are unclean, it can make us more susceptible to respiratory and cardiovascular disease, increase our risk for some types of cancer and worsen allergy and asthma symptoms.
The good news is we all have the ability to make a difference when it comes to protecting Earth and improving our environment. You can start with some simple changes right in your own home and neighborhood that can lead to big results. Here are a few ideas to consider:
- Walk or ride your bike to the corner store or to the gym instead of using your gas-powered vehicle. If the commute to work is a long one, then try carpooling with a coworker instead of driving separately. All of these things help to reduce air pollution and gasoline consumption. Plus, it might put a few extra dollars back in your wallet, for a little lift to your financial well-being, too!
- Buy a reusable water bottle instead of drinking out of plastic bottles. According to the Container Recycling Institute, 86% of disposable plastic water bottles used in the United States wind up in landfills. Others that aren’t recycled properly may end up in our waterways and parks, which can be hazardous to wildlife.
- Conserve water by only running the water when needed while washing dishes or brushing your teeth. It may not seem like a lot, but you would be surprised how much water is wasted in just one minute of use.
- Use all-natural cleaning products free of chlorine bleach, ammonia, dyes and harsh chemicals. It’s not only better for your health, but also the water supply. You can also make homemade cleaning products using items that you might find in your pantry like lemon juice, vinegar or baking soda.
- Volunteer for a park clean-up in your community or bring a trash bag and gloves on your next walk to pick up litter on your route. Not only is litter unattractive to the eye, but chemicals from the plastics and other materials can eventually degrade and make their way into the ground and waterways.
- Don’t forget to recycle, reuse or donate items that you no longer need. Spring cleaning is the perfect time to go through your closet and get rid of items that you no longer wear. But instead of sending items to a landfill, drop them off at a thrift store.
By each of us doing our part, we will be able to enjoy all of the beautiful gifts that our planet provides for years to come.
