Independent Health has long been steadfast in its commitment to enhancing the health and well-being of our community through various bicycle-focused programs and events, such as Reddy Bikeshare and GObike’s annual SkyRide and Bike Month programming.
In addition, for the second consecutive year, Independent Health held a contest to celebrate National Bike Month in May. We asked Western New Yorkers to tell us – in 350 words or less – why they love to ride their bike. Nearly 100 entries from people throughout our region were received; however, it was an entry submitted by Nan Haynes of Buffalo that was deemed the best by our panel of judges. Here’s Nan’s winning essay:
When I ride my bike, I feel the happiness of a dog with his head out a car window. My late husband and I had a beagle named Billy, who loved to ride in our car like that. I could see the joy in him while he took in the smells and sights as they flew past by him. I feel the same way when I ride my bike. Pure joy.
I ride for hours when the temperature is above 40 degrees, it’s not raining, and the wind is calm. So, with our increasingly mild winters, I ride throughout the year. One sunny but cold day last February, I decided to brave the 28-degree temperature and head out. I had a blast. I guess my happiness showed because that evening my friend called to say I was on the local news. I imagine the story was “crazy old lady rides bike in snow.”
I have several great routes. When it’s warm, I ride from my home in Allentown to the Outer Harbor, where everyone appears to be as happy as I am. I take in the whole area enjoying the views of the lake and sharing smiles with other cyclists. But in the cooler weather, when cold winds blow off the lake, I head to Delaware Park, where I ride laps of Ring Road. And since I grew up in that neighborhood, I leave the park and ride past my childhood home.
Another of my favorite rides is to Snyder where I visit the school I attended. It’s a beautiful campus with many happy memories. I have a fun route there, taking back streets all the way to the campus on Harlem Road.
I’m 69 years of age but I’m in better health than most people my age. For that, I thank my bike.

In recognition of her winning entry, Nan received a Bike Month Prize Pack that included two free registrations to GObike’s 10th annual SkyRide presented by Independent Health, two free annual memberships to Reddy Bikeshare, a $200 gift card to Dick’s Sporting Goods and an Independent Health prize pack.
“Independent Health congratulates Nan on her winning entry, as well as everyone who took the time to let us know why they are passionate about riding a bike,” said Michelle Carbery, Corporate Wellness Specialist-Senior, Independent Health. “We hope Nan’s story motivates more people to take up bicycling so that they can pedal their way to better health.”
Riding a bicycle on a regular basis is a great way to help protect yourself from serious health problems that are associated with a sedentary lifestyle. By biking 30 minutes a day, you can reduce your risk of obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, depression, diabetes and anxiety.
“Bicycling is a healthy, low-impact activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities,” said Carbery. “Adding a bike ride into your day will help you burn calories while building strength, stamina and cardiovascular endurance. It can also ease feelings of stress, depression, or anxiety and improve your overall mood and mental well-being. Plus, it’s fun, economical and great for the environment.”
